As the nation’s capital, DC has pretty much everything, including a large selction of internet providers. To keep you from getting overwhelmed with so much choice, here’s our curated list of the best three:
This one was close, but Xfinity wins because it offers high-speed internet to a larger area than the competition. Coverage is about 99 percent.
In addition, Xfinity offers some of the fastest internet around, with max speeds reaching 1000 Mbps (gigabit speed) and average speeds usually in the 100-200 Mbps range, which is more than enough for most users.
Of course, you don’t need to go to the top of the line. You can get something more basic and save or you can bundle it with other services and get more value.
#2 Verizon FIOS
FIOS probably would have made it to the top of this list if it was available in a larger area. Right now, it 75 percent coverage, which is good, but not as good as the competition.
The good thing about FIOS, though, is that it’s super fast. Connection speeds regularly average 200 Mbps and above, which is way more than most people will ever need.
Verizon has a DSL option for those who can’t get FIOS, but it’s quite a bit slower and really not an option considering Xfinity is also available.
This is the choice for people who really don’t need much from their home internet connection and prefer instead to save some money.
This is not to say Earthlink is bad, but with average speeds around 20-30 Mbps, people with multiple users in the home or who need to do things such as video calling might struggle to do so without trouble.
But since plans are about half of what the competition offers, this could still be a viable option.
It’s only right that residents of the nation’s democratic epicenter have so much choice when it comes to internet providers, but don’t worry about choosing wrong. Start with the three on this list and find what you need.
